Hyundai Motor Company began in 1968 building Cortinas under license from Ford, followed by Korea's first domestic car, the Pony, in 1975. The company reached America in 1986 with the Excel, but quality issues hampered sales. In response, Hyundai massively increased their research and development budget, rapidly improving build quality and engineering. A California-based design studio was established in 1990, and by the early 2000s, they were ranked among the highest quality automakers by J.D Power. In 2005, the company began production the Elantra and Sonata at their Montgomery, Alabama plant. In recent years, the success of their Genesis and Equus sedans have helped them get a foothold in the luxury market.
